Giacomo by Podere la Villa is made of 100% Merlot and is named after the creator of SuperTuscan wines Giacomo Tachis, the father of the current owner of the winery Ilaria Tachis. Building on the complex structure, Giacomo adds a lively, elegant tannic note and a slight sweetness that is precisely what Giacomo would have loved!

Harvested by hand at the beginning of September. Usually, the grapes are gathered in one day and brought immediately to the cellar. Vinification takes place in 25 hl steel vats for about 10 days and maceration lasts for a total of 30 days. After racking (the wine is drawn off of the lees), it ages in 30hl cement vats for 6 months and then it is transferred to pre-used barriques for another 6 months. Prior to bottling the wine is blended in cement vats where it rests another 2 months.

The wine is brilliant ruby red colour, on the nose, it is sweet with woody and mineral notes of rhubarb, buttermilk, and mint. On the palate, Giacomo is elegant with smooth tannins and pleasant minerality.

Podere la Villa

The story of the winery goes back to 2003 when Giacomo Tachis (the creator od Supertuscan wines Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Tignanello), decided to replant the old 1 1/4 hectare vineyard in front of Podere La Villa with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes.

In 2006 the vines began to bear fruit and indicated that the grapes would produce excellent results if they were treated with passion and dedication.

The winery is currently run by Giacomo’s daughter, Ilaria, who makes 2 wines: Chianti Classico il Pargolo (named after her son who was born the year of the first harvest), and Giacomo (Merlot 100%, named in honour of Ilaria’s father, Giacomo Tachis).

  1. 5 out of 5

Giacomo, a rich and velvety Merlot, is produced by Ilaria Tachis as a tribute to her father Giacomo Tachis, the creator of the Super Tuscan.
This perfectly balanced Merlot pairs exceptionally well with steak or wild game.
If you are fortunate enough to find this wine in your local wine shop (as my family in California has been), you must not pass it up!
Bring home a bottle (or two)……open it, let it breathe and drink in a taste of the of the history and legacy of Giacomo himself…..a wine he would truly be proud of!

  2. 5 out of 5

Consistent intense ruby, intense and complex. A fully rounded pure Merlot well balanced with dominant tertiaries of balsamic notes and wood with walnut. Dry warm soft fresh tannic but very savoury. With a persistent body, ready to be harmonious. Good product

  3. 5 out of 5

Merlot complex with an important nose and a great finish. Alcohol not invasive. Great in the mouth!

Chocolate, coffee dark berries. The best wine from the tasting!
